Position Title: Nursing Program Faculty-Adjunct

Position Accountable To: Nursing Program Director

 GENERAL SUMMARY: Faculty teach an average of 12 hours of load per academic year. Academic load can be made up of face-to-face courses, hybrid courses, and/or clinical/lab/simulation experiences. Teaching assignments will be made in collaboration with the Nursing Program Director and the Dean of the School of Health Professions.

 PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Plan and deliver learning experiences for nursing students to make maximum use of class/lab/clinical time.

  1. Complete assigned nursing education load.
  2. Deliver assigned didactic (classroom) lectures using effective, evidence-based teaching strategies by facilitating student learning through interactive activities, case studies, discussion, and other activities as appropriate for the course.
  3. Evaluate student performance. Evaluation of student performance in classroom includes evaluation of papers, projects, and journals, etc. and returning these to students in timely fashion.
  4. Attend department meetings and participate in committees as assigned.
  5. Hold office hours or provide scheduled availability for student questions, or clarification of course content.
  6. Identify students requiring academic intervention and refer to appropriate support services
  7. Uphold all institutional, state board of nursing, and accreditation requirements, including the Missouri State Board of Nursing Minimum Standards
  8. Perform other duties as assigned.

 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:

For undergraduate pre-licensure programs:

MSN preferred

Teaching experience preferred

RN, MSN-in-Process within one year of graduation mandatory.

Current, unencumbered, Missouri nursing license.

Approval by the Missouri State Board of Nursing as a faculty member.

 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

For face-to-face courses:

Frequently stand for at least one hour consecutively.

Operate classroom audio-visual equipment.

Speak loudly and clearly enough to be understood by students.

 OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Communication: The faculty member must be able to utilize effective communication with peers, students, clients and their families, and other healthcare providers. This includes, but is not limited to:

  1. Ability to read at a competency level that allows one to safely carry out the essential functions of an assignment (examples: handwritten documentation, printed policy and procedure manuals, clinical guidelines and instructions, course syllabi).
  2. Ability to effectively interpret and process information.
  3. Ability to effectively communicate (verbally and in writing) with students, peers, clients/families, healthcare professionals, and others within the community.
  4. Ability to access information and to communicate and document effectively via computer.
  5. Ability to recognize, interpret, and respond to nonverbal behavior of self and others.

Behavior: The faculty member must be capable of exercising good judgment, developing empathetic and therapeutic relationships with students, clients and others, and tolerating close and direct physical contact with a diverse population. They will include people of all ages, races, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, as well as individuals with weight disorders, physicals disfigurement, and medical and mental health problems. This includes, but is not limited to:

  1. Ability to work with multiple clients/families and colleagues at the same time.
  2. Ability to foster and maintain cooperative and collegial relationships with students and peers.

Critical Thinking: The faculty member must possess sufficient abilities in the areas of calculation, critical problem solving, reasoning, and judgment to be able to comprehend and process information within a reasonable time frame as determined by the profession. The faculty member must be able to prioritize, organize, and attend to talks and responsibilities efficiently. This includes, but is not limited to:

  1. Ability to collect, interpret and analyze written, verbal and observed data about students.
  2. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, integrate information and make decisions.
  3. Ability to apply knowledge of the principles, indications, and contraindications for nursing interventions.
  4. Ability to act safely and ethically in the classroom, simulation/skills lab, and in the community.

 OTHER INFORMATION AND ATTRIBUTES:

This position requires a minimum of 12 hours of academic load per year. Overload can be negotiated.

 Serves as an effective, collegial member of nursing faculty.

  1. Contributes to monitoring and evaluating of students.
  2. Supports the work and efforts of colleagues in achieving the programmatic, departmental, and institutional mission and vision.
  3. Engages collaboratively in the development and attainment of program and course goals.
  4. Seeks innovative, cost-effective solutions to programmatic, departmental, and institutional challenges.
  5. Exercises effective time management by developing and maintaining timelines for personal tasks and student learning activities.
  6. Prioritizes instructional responsibilities and guides students in managing their academic workload

 Demonstrates an understanding of substantial higher education issues.

 Participates actively in appropriate state, regional and national professional organizations, as well as community groups.
